How Luxardo Ensures Food Safety with Raybox X-ray Technology

Luxardo: a historic tradition in the food industry

Girolamo Luxardo SpA is a historic Italian company founded in 1821 and specialized in the production of liqueurs, flavorings, syrups, and jams. Headquartered in Torreglia, in the province of Padua, the company is still family-owned today and represents an internationally recognized brand.

Thanks to the quality of its products, Luxardo exports to over 76 countries, maintaining high standards and a strong focus on food safety.

The challenge: improving quality control and food safety

For a company with an established reputation like Luxardo, ensuring maximum product safety is essential.

In particular, in the production of:

  • jams
  • cherries in syrup

It was necessary to further increase the level of control along the production line, especially in relation to the standards imposed by the integrated certification system.

Why traditional systems were not sufficient

Before the introduction of X-ray technology, Luxardo used:

  • metal detector
  • camera visual inspection systems

However, these technologies were not able to cover all possible cases of contaminants present inside the packaged products.

This limitation has made clear the need for a more advanced and comprehensive solution.

The Raybox Solution: Advanced X-ray Inspection

To address this need, Luxardo chose Raytec’s Raybox technology, and in particular the RB-050-C-PV model, ideal for handling even large formats.

 The solution allows:

  • the detection of foreign bodies
  • the detection of defective packages
  • the management of complex formats such as 5.4 kg cans

How Raybox Technology Works

Raybox is a machine for the automatic in-line radioscopic inspection of food products packaged in:

  •  glass
  • tin can
  • brick

The operation is based on the use of X-rays that pass through the product and are analyzed by a detector (linear sensor).

 The system offers:

  •  an adjustable viewpoint for a complete inspection
  • precise and repeatable image analysis
  • automatic detection of defects and contaminants

CVS software allows you to compare each package with a predefined standard, automatically discarding non-compliant ones.

Results: Total safety and standards compliance

The introduction of X-ray technology has allowed Luxardo to achieve concrete results:

✅ complete coverage of possible contaminating materials

✅ significant increase in the level of food safety

✅ compliance with certification standards

✅ greater reliability of the production process

As highlighted by CEO Giorgio Luxardo:

“Thanks to Raybox we were able to achieve full coverage of the material case series […] ensuring the highest possible level of food safety.”

Inline integration and collaboration with Raytec

The installation of the Raybox system was carried out with the support of Raytec technicians, while Luxardo independently managed the preparation of:

  • conveyor belts
  • power lines

This collaboration allowed for efficient and tailored integration within the existing production line.
